Dr Andrea Waling

 

Andrea was an Assistant Lecturer in Sociology in the School of Social Sciences. She had been teaching at Monash since 2011, and has recently completed her PhD (2015) investigating representations of masculinity in contemporary Australian media as related to men’s lived experiences.  She completed her undergraduate degree with highest honours (2010) at Carleton University in Ottawa,  majoring in anthropology and minoring in sociology and sexuality studies. Her PhD thesis, ‘The Aussie Bloke’ is part of the Changing Men Collection at Michigan State University in Michigan, USA and is currently being adapted into a book entitled White Masculinity in Contemporary Australia: The Good Ol’ Aussie Bloke. 

Andrea  has recently moved over to the Australian Research Centre in Sex, Health and Society (ARCSHS) at La Trobe University to join  Muscling Up: Australian Men, Sexualisation and Body Image Enhancement (2015-2017), an ARC discovery project with Prof Gary Dowsett, Dr Duane Duncan and Dr Steven Angelides. She will remain an affiliate of SoSS.

Professional Service

Andrea was a committee member of the Monash Diverse Genders and Sexualities (DGS) Advisory Group and a member of the Ally Network at Monash University. She was involved with the DGS Working Group to create guidelines and resources for LGBTIQ inclusive teaching practice in higher education. 

She is also a member of  The Australian National Men’s Health Forum, The American Men’s Studies Association, and the Zoe Belle Gender Collective (ZBGC). 

Community Outreach

Andrea is an ordinary board member of the Zoe Belle Gender Collective(ZBGC), a not-for-profit organisation seeking to support the trans, sex and gender diverse community of Melbourne and greater Victoria. She is also the current project manager for ZBGC’s Youth Suicide Prevention Project, currently auspiced at cohealth and funded by the HEY Project and the Department of Health.
