Originally from the UK, I studied history at Caius College, Cambridge. Here, I was introduced to social history, being especially influenced by the work of E. P. Thompson and Vic Gatrell.

    I followed this with an MA at Penn State University. My MA thesis was on conflict reporting in the British press, and was supervised by Mary Mander, Brian Winston and Lisa Henderson.

    Doctoral studies came next  at the University of Massuchusetts, where I was supervised by Michael Morgan, Sut Jhally and Justin Lewis. My thesis was on attitudes to foreign policy among US television audiences. The study took a multi-methodological approach, using cultivation analysis and focus group research.
