Brett completed a Bachelor degree (1993) and Masters by Research (1997) at the University of Canberra.

He then moved to the University of Queensland where he finished his PhD in 2001, graduating from the sociology program and receiving the “Dean’s Commendation for an Outstanding Research Higher Degree Thesis”.

In 2002, he accepted a full-time appointment at the University of Tasmania in Hobart, where he taught in both the sociology, and journalism & media studies programs.

Brett joined Monash University in 2005. Based at the Caulfield campus, he has performed a number of leadership roles, including serving as School Postgraduate Coordinator, Deputy Head of School (Budget and Planning), and coordinating Excellence in Research for Australia (ERA) submissions at two-digit (20 Language, Communication and Culture) and four-digital levels (2001 Communications and Media Studies).
