Research interests
His main area of research is public order policing. His most significant contribution is a single-authored book, Batons and Blockades: Policing Industrial Disputes in Australasia , Circa, 2005. Other research interests include the policing of political and environmental protest, police history and reform, police unionism, comparative criminal justice, the role of the Australian Federal Police, policing in the Pacific region, and labour history. He is an executive member of the Criminal Justice Research Consortium.

Currently, researching the policing of climate camp protests in Australia and Great Britain.
