My secondary research areas and interests are media accountability, journalism ethics self-regulation systems and reporting climate change and environmental issues. I have served two stints with the UN peacekeeping forces (1987 – United Nations Force in Cyprus and 1992-1993 United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon) and have a keen interest in war and conflict reporting.

Free speech and its relationship to the public interest sits at the core of journalistic practice and theory. I have lately started to consider how the illusive concept ‘in the public interest’ can be more clearly defined.
