Submission to Independent Media Inquiry

The call for submissions to the federal inquiry into Australian media coincided with the completion of my journal article on the Norwegian model for a one stop shop committee system for media ethics complaints. So, I wrote an executive summary and submitted the full article to the Inquiry. You’ll find mine and the other submissions here. The Inquiry hearings start on November 7 and the report is expected to be completed by the end of February 2012.

Unfortunately the terms of reference only includes news papers which seems very old fashioned in our times of media convergance. Another very important issue is also missing from the terms of reference – media ownership concentration. Anyway, let’s view the inquiry as a starting point to launch some serious thinking and discussion on the role of media and professional journalism in Australia.

The article has also been submitted to the Australian Journalism Review and is currently under peer-review.
