Karen is currently supervising international PhD students researching Asian theatre and performance.
“… the ability to explore a range of Malay theatre conventions in the performance task has given me the chance to possess new skills and experiences I can now use in the future.”
“I would like to express my deepest gratitude to my (PhD) main supervisor Dr Karen Kartomi Thomas, for her thoughtful guidance, caring, patience, and warm encouragement. She guided me particularly in expressing my thought explicitly, especially when I am struggling with my English writing throughout the journey. When she took over the responsibility as the main supervisor five months before submission, she showed her high dedication in order to ensure I complete my study according to my study plan. For that Karen, I thank you with all my heart. Your continued support and attention become a strong motivation for me to reach the destination.”
Since 2013, Karen has taught theatre performance studies, Indonesian language, and business studies (entrepreneurship, creativity and innovation) at Monash University and Swinburne University, and in the 1990s, was in charge of Indonesian language at The University of Melbourne where she taught language through theatre and performance; she also taught Indonesian at Deakin and LaTrobe Universities. She is an experienced administrator having been head of Indonesian at The University of Melbourne for three years, and director of an education business for seven years.
