I have just joined Monash in September 2012. My specializing field is media and cultural studies. From 2013 I am working as the director of Monash Asia Institute.
I was born and brought up in Tokyo. After working for a Japanese TV station, I moved to Australia to conduct postgraduate studies (in Melbounre, Perth and Sydney). Then I moved back to Japan and finally returned to Melbourne again!
As the director of MAI, I am very much interested in promoting researches on trans-Asian connections and dialogues in a global perspective and rethinking various concepts/theories that have been developed from Euro-American experiences.
I am also keen to facilitate discussion and creative practices of how we de-compartmentalize the studies about “Asia” within Australia and how we re-imagine Australia as part of Asia and Asia as part of Australia.
Let’s make Monash and Melbourne a stimulating hub of innovative studies of “Asia” !
