After graduating from Wuhan University in Central China, he worked as a research fellow at the Institute of Political Science, Sichuan Academy of Social Sciences, China. Before coming to Australia, his research interests were mainly in the political reforms in China, the former Soviet Union and East European countries. He has published several articles and translated several books and articles on the topics.
