Dr Mathias Stevenson completed his PhD, The Politics of ‘Connective Marginalities’ in Italian Reggae Culture, at Monash University in 2014. His research focused on the transnational flow of reggae music and culture from Jamaica to Italy and its local adaptation (and subsequent synthesis with rap) as an expression of alternative and oppositional youth politics in the 1980s and 1990s. Mathias has also completed a Master of Arts in Italian Studies at Monash on the early cinema of independent Roman filmmaker, Nanni Moretti.
Mathias is currently working on a joint research project exploring the political, social, linguistic, and cultural significance of various under-researched musical contexts and artists in Italy from the beginning of the 1980s to the present.
He has been published with the following article on Nanni Moretti:
‘”Lo specchio frammentato ed il pagliaccio piangente”: Alienation and l’Umorismo in the films of Nanni Moretti.’ In Studi d’Italianistica nell’Africa Australe. 18 (2) 2005.
He teaches into the Bachelor of Global studies.
