In the first week of tutorials students in some tutorials for ATS1369 were asked to make a postcard (anonymous) for the ‘PostSecret @ DoTS’ project. Students were asked to chose from one of two topics:

•   what I am most excited about now that I’m at university  OR  what freaks me out the most now that I’m at university

Some chose to create two postcards and answer both.

Here are the secrets so far … recognise yourself in any of them? All of them?

Don’t forget there is LOTS of help available at university if things start to get too much, in both your studies and your life in general.

We won an Award for Programs that Enhance Learning in the category of Widening Participation. The awards are run by the Office for Learning and Teaching (OLT), Department of Industry, Innovation, Science, Research and Tertiary Education (DIISRTE)

The Diploma o f Tertiary Studies (DoTS) is a Monash University initiative to increase participation in higher education in some of Victoria’s most disadvantaged regions. Designed for students from backgrounds of low socioeconomic status with records of modest academic achievement. DoTS is a central component of Monash University’s social inclusion strategy. Commencing in 2000 with 40 students at Monash. Gippsland. DoTS now operates on three campuses with a planned intake of 300 students across seven faculties for 2013. Since 2000. 836 students who commenced in DoTS have graduated with a Monash University Bachelor degree. DoTS is a supported pathway, equivalent to the first year of a Bachelor degree. designed to address learners’ identityies and aspirations as well as skills acquisition. An immersion- rather than preparation – program. DoTS allows students to study six standard first year units concurrently with two core first year DoTS units. Students in DoTS demonstrate potential and desire for learning, but for a combination of institutional. cultural and economic reasons. have been unable to gain direct access to university. The socially inclusive pedagogy and curriculum of DoTS meet the learning needs of these students and prepare them with the concepts. confidence and skills to succeed in undergraduate study.

Mia’s research focuses on the field of tertiary level education, pathways, and transition.

Additionally she researches in a number of areas connected with cultural history, particularly the interdisciplinary field of history and film.  

Current research projects

Mia is currently working with the DoTS team and other SAMSS staff on a number of research projects to do with transition and pathways at a tertiary level.

She is also working on a book based on her PhD research, titled ‘Out of Synch: Screen History.’

Mia is part of the team that teaches the Diploma of Tertiary Studies (DoTS) on the Berwick, Peninsula and Gippsland campuses.

Mia completed her BA at Monash in 1998 majoring in History and English, and did her BA(Hon) in History in 1999 . In 2000-2001 she completed a Master of Arts specialising in Public History.

Mia worked as a Coursework and Policy Officer in the Faculty of Arts administrative area for 5 years from 2001 until 2006.

Mia completed an interdisciplinary PhD at Monash in the fields of Historical studies and Film and Television studies,  graduating in 2011.

For over a decade Mia has lectured and tutored in a variety of units, including ‘Australian history on film and television’, ‘Nations at War’, ‘Fears and Fantasies: Deviance in History’, ‘Alternative Film and Video’ and guest lecturing in other cultural history units.

Since 2010 Mia has been a member of the Diploma of Tertiary Studies pathway. She is currently a Lecturer in the two core units, and has been the Campus Academic Coordinator for Berwick DoTS since 2011.
