Two new Healthtalk Australia online resources launched

Two innovative new online resources – one on lived experiences of severe mental health problems and the second on experiences of family carers – were launched in Melbourne on 16 June. New additions to the Healthtalk Australia website, these resources draw on data collected for an ARC Linkage Project led by A/Prof Renata Kokanovic exploring experiences of severe mental problems and supported decision making, in the wake of Victoria’s new mental health legislation. Thirty people with lived experience and 30 family carers throughout Victoria were interviewed for the study between 2014 and 2015, and excerpts from their video and audio recorded interviews are used in the online resources.

Held at the Monash University Law Chambers, the launch event comprised a workshop attended by over 80 people from the mental health sector followed by a formal launch by the Hon Steve Dimopolous, MP, Chair of the Mental Health Expert Taskforce. Also in attendance were Monash University’s Vice Provost (Research) Prof Pauline Nestor, the study’s co-investigators (Prof Bernadette McSherry, Prof Helen Herrman and Dr Lisa Brophy, all from the University of Melbourne), and representatives from the five partner organisations on the project (the Victorian Department of Health and Human Services, Mind Australia, Neami National, WellWays, VMIAC, and Tandem Carers.
