Creative thinking stimulates innovation, broadens perspective and encourages critical thinking. It is fundamental to the success of human development and transports ideas beyond their usual realm. It is often overlooked but its absence always noticed.

This project is about collaboration … collaboration between: artist and composer, composer and performers, performer/composer and filmmaker.

When approached to compose music based on a series of paintings of Victor Majzner, first impressions were of varied moods; dark, flowing, bright, sad etc. I then read his description of his experiences:

“… I travelled to the Bungle Bungles – Kimberley, Western Australia – to be one with the land.”

… and contemplated:

“What kind of angels helped create this place?”

“… I imagined that the type of angels that were required for this task must have been quirky as the place itself… at times, white and pure on their godly mission, sometimes black and grey mischievous and rebellious, trying to come to grips with their creation or testing god’s design.

Part 1 is an collective improvisation based on Paul Garbowsky’s and my visual interpretation Victor Mazjner’s 16 paintings and of the above explanation into a musical conversation; improvisations that transform images and words into contextual ideas and sound. The resultant sounds are a sensory description of a reflective interpretation of anxiety – the past – heat – the now.

The individual performances are an investigation into the manipulation of sound using extended techniques including prepared piano, quarter-tones, multi-phonics, distortion, overtone techniques (sax)

Part 2 is a pre-composed composition that is a positive perspective of the angels that live in the Bungle Bungles; moving from rock to rock in continuous motion … with beauty and hope.

The recording and filming was the work of Ben Grayson, who creates visuals though the eyes of a musician…

Influenced by compositions of John Adams, this composition investigates rhythmic groove, momentum and flow. This was composed for musicians to explore 8th note groove and the manipulation of time (feel) in the context of a rigid compositional structure; the dynamics are improvised.
