I have been a lecturer in English, children’s literature and creative writing at the Australian Catholic University and Deakin, as well as a municipal and school librarian. Poems by Eminent Ladies was my MA thesis. on anthologised poetry by woman poets born before 1810.
My PhD thesis was based on the record I kept of my two children’s responses to books from birth (6000 handwritten pages), and has subsequently been published by Routledge as Stories, Pictures and Reality: Two children tell (2007).
I have numerous academic articles published and regularly attend and present at conferences, some papers leading to publication, including ones in the forthcoming Poetry and Childhood (ed. Morag Styles. Routledge, 2010) and When Literacy Begins (ed. Bettina Kümmerling-Meibauer, Benjamin, 2011). Also in Writing the Australian Child (ed. Clare Bradford, U of Western Australia Press, 1996).
Since 1996 I have run a manuscript assessment agency, Create a Kids’ Book, and am a recognised expert on children’s literature having been Victorian Judge for the CBCA Book of the Year Awards. I have been interviewed on radio a number of times.
